The importance of bumper bars
In the unfortunate event of a collision, modern cars are designed to crumple a section at a time to absorb the energy of the impact and reduce the forces affected upon the vehicle’s occupants.
Right on the front line of this energy absorption system is the bumper bar. This is why many more highly sophisticated materials are being used these days in the manufacture of car body parts. Special plastics are at the forefront of this trend, which is the reason we see cars being fitted with one-piece plastic scuttles, bumper and valance panels at the front and rear.
The downside to this technology is twofold. Modern bumper bars are far more susceptible to scratching and cracking following even the most minor low speed impacts. In addition, they are far more expensive to replace, as they are not only larger and more difficult to fit, but they have to be re-painted as well.
